Air Force boxers won four and lost two bouts in the semifinals Friday at the National Collegiate Boxing Association Regional Championships hosted by the University of Nevada in Reno.
"We got off to a tremendous start," said head coach Eddie Weichers, Jr. "I can't say enough about the competitive spirit all of our boxers showed tonight (Friday). The stage is set for us to win another regional championships, but to do so, we have to show that same spirit Saturday. We still have a lot of tough matches ahead of us."
Weichers said the "bout of the night" came in the 175-pound division with the Falcons Leif Nordhagen winning a three-round decision over Mike Schuck from the University of California-Berekley.
"Leif lost to Schuck in a bout earlier this year," said Weichers. "But he fought a masterful fight to win the decision. He came out strong and beat Schuck to the punch in all three rounds. If we could name a boxer of the night, that title would go to Lief."
In addition to Nordhagen's win, the Falcons Thomas Parker (139-pound division), Jake Hostetler (156-lb.) and Clell Knight (165-lb.) won their bouts. The Falcons Brett Hadley (125-lb.) and Geoff Woolf (132-lb.) lost their bouts.
The four winners advance to Saturday's finals and will be joined by Darren Smith (119-lb.), Frankie Woods (147-lb.), Ryan Coates (185-lb.), Ethan Sabin (195-lb.) and heavyweight Brian Trumble.
