The 33rd-ranked UNLV women's tennis team handed Air Force its second consecutive defeat with a 6-1 victory over the Falcons Saturday in San Diego. With the win, the Rebels improved to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in league action, while the Falcons fell to 10-8 and 0-2 in the Mountain West Conference.
Air Force's senior co-captain Heather Shelby pulled off a major upset at No. 2 singles, handing UNLV sophomore Gyorgyi Zsiros her first loss ever in conference play and just her second loss in dual competition. Zsiros, now 30-2 all-time in dual matches, lost the first set to Shelby, 6-2, then came back to win the second set, 6-3. Shelby played a tough third set and eventually won it in a tiebreaker, 7-5, to break Zsiros' 28-match winning streak in duals.
AFA's other senior co-captain, Kelli O'Bryant, won the first set over UNLV's Tracie Chong at the No. 3 spot before falling, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. UNLV won the other four singles matches in straight sets.
UNLV won the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and 3. Air Force's Laura Nigro and Gina Black won the No. 1 match, 8-4, over Paulina Janus and Agnieszka Abram.
The Falcons return to action next Thursday, March 27 against MWC foe New Mexico in Albuquerque.
