Aztecs beat Falcons in game one, 11-7

San Diego State starter Mike Moat threw a complete game and the Aztecs scored five runs in the final two innings in an 11-7 win over Air Force in a Mountain West Conference baseball game Friday, April 25, at Falcon Field.
SDSU improved to 20-23 overall and 12-7 in second place in the MWC. Air Force fell to 12-27 overall and 0-18 in the league.
Moat, a junior from Longmont, Colo., went nine innings and gave up seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits with two strikeouts. He faced 39 batters and threw 107 pitches.
Each team scored two runs in the first inning. Aztec Garrett Cook drove in a run with a single up the middle and another run scored on a Falcon error. Falcon leftfielder Josh Phifer hit a two-run homer to left field to tie the game. Reilly Embrey hit a three-run homer in the top of the third for a 5-2 Aztec lead. The Falcons scored twice in the bottom of the third to make score 5-4. Derck Kasel and Mike Rose each had RBI singles in the inning.
Air Force took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of sixth with three runs on two hits. With one out, Dan Petro singled, Rose was hit by pitch and Bowie Frost was walked to load the bases. Nelson Prouty then hit a two-out pitch from Moat to right-field for a bases-clearing triple.
SDSU quickly regained the lead with four runs in the top of the seventh. Embrey's second home run of the game was a two-run shot to left field. Cook and Ryan Wilson also had RBI singles in the inning. Air Force was held scoreless on just two hits in the final three innings.
Embrey and Chad Corona each hit two home runs in the game. Embrey went 2-for-5 with five RBI. James Guerrero and Corona each went 4-for-5 as SDSU collected 18 hits on the afternoon.
Petro and Frost each led the Falcons with two hits. Prouty drove in three while Phifer drove in two. AFA starter Paul Vignola took the loss. The freshman went six and one-third innings and allowed 10 runs, nine earned, on 14 hits with one strikeout. Scott Mears threw the final two and two-thirds and gave up one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 1 p.m. at Falcon Field. The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m.
