Howes and Phifer earn Verizon Academic All-District honors

Air Force Academy senior baseball players Adam Howes and Josh Phifer were named to the Verizon Academic All-District VII Baseball Team (University Division) for their accomplishments on the field and in the classroom. Both players earned first-team academic all-district honors for the second consecutive year.
Both players will be on the ballot for Verizon Academic All-American honors.
Howes, a first baseman from Phoenix, Ariz., carries a 3.61 grade point average with a major in economics. Howes was a third-team Verizon Academic All-American last season. This season, he has started 43 of the team's 45 games and is batting .320 with six home runs and 32 RBI. He leads the team with 17 stolen bases, 45 runs scored and four triples.
Phifer, an outfielder from Torrington, Wyo., has a 3.87 GPA with a major in operations research. Phifer was a second-team Verizon Academic All-American last season. This season, he leads the Mountain West Conference in batting average (.422), slugging percentage (.795) and on-base percentage (.505). He could become the first player in the four-year history of the league to lead all three categories in the same season. He also leads the team in hits (68), doubles (18), home runs (12), RBI (53), total bases (128) and hit by pitch (13).
