Cookie Day's penalty kick midway through the first half was the game-winner as Air Force beat Fairfield, 2-1, in a non-conference women's soccer match Sunday, Aug. 31, at the Cadet Soccer Stadium.
Air Force improved to 2-0 on the season, the first 2-0 start since the Falcons went Division I in 1996. Fairfield fell to 0-1-1 on the year.
All of the scoring was in the first half as the game was played in cloudy, foggy conditions with mist and temperatures near 50 degrees. Fairfield scored at 9:52 mark as Lindsey Pulito collected a loose ball in the penalty box and scored from 15 yards out.
The Falcons tied the game in the 23rd minute as Jennifer Rowland scored from Leigh-Anne Withers. Withers made the pass to the middle of the field at the top of the penalty box and Rowland's shot bet Katie Eky high to the far side. Four minutes later, Cookie Day scored on a penalty kick.
Eky made 12 saves for the Stags while Falcon goalkeeper J.J. Wolf made seven. Air Force outshot Fairfield, 28-12 overall, and 14-8 on goal.
Air Force travels to St. Louis, Mo., for the annual Toys for Tots/Armed Forces Tournament, Sept. 5-7. AFA plays Army on Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. and then St. Louis on Sept. 7 at 1:30 p.m.
