Sept. 19, 2003
Junior Marcus Sagastume scored the only goal of the game in the 71st minute to lead the Air Force men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Bucknell Friday in the first round of the 2003 Falcon Invitational at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Loyola Marymount defeated Oral Roberts, 2-0, in the other first round matchup.
Sagastume took a centering pass from junior Daniel Bolin and fired a 25-yard laser into the bottom left corner of the net past Bucknell goalie Adam Edwards with 19:15 remaining in regulation.
The game was a back and forth affair from the start. Bucknell had a prime scoring chance in the 10th minute as Ori Abradi took a shot from 10 yards out that got past Air Force goalie Brian Dougal, but Falcon Clay McGillivray made the save just in front of the net.
Air Force, which played without two of its leading scorers, sophomore Daniel Wasson and senior Casey Chronister, due to injuries, improved to 4-3 with the victory. Bucknell evened its record at 3-3.
Dougal, a sophomore netminder, improved his record to 3-1 and posted the second shutout of his career. He made three saves, including a diving stop on another Adrabi shot with about five minutes remaining in the game.
The total shots were fairly even with Air Force holding a 15-13 advantage, but the Falcons had nine shots on goal, compared to four for the Bison.
In the first game of the day, Kevin Novak and Pat Parker each scored a goal as Loyola Marymount improved to 4-2-1 this season. Matthew Kovar posted an assist on each goal. Oral Roberts fell to 1-4-1.
The tournament concludes on Sunday, Sept. 21 as Loyola Marymount takes on Bucknell at 12 p.m., followed by Air Force against Oral Roberts at 2 p.m.
