Sophomore Clay McGillivray scored his first career goal five minutes and 36 seconds into the first overtime Sunday to give the Air Force men's soccer team a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Oral Roberts in the 2003 Falcon Invitational. McGillivray's goal gave Air Force a 2-0 record during the tournament, but the Falcons finished second behind Loyola Marymount, who was also 2-0 and held a better goal differential (+3 to +2).
McGillivray, a defender from Liberty High School in Colorado Springs, found himself in front of an open net after taking a pass from sophomore Colin Eames and buried the shot past ORU goalie Hector Zapata. Falcon junior Marcus Sagastume started the play with a pass to Eames. Sagastume had two goals and two assists for the tournament en route to earning the Most Outstanding Offensive Player award.
Sagastume had a chance to win the game in overtime but his chip shot hit the right post with 7:30 remaining in the extra stanza. The midfielder from Colorado Springs helped Air Force (5-3) overcome a 2-0 second-half deficit by assisting on freshman Josh Sanders' first career goal in the 74th minute. Sagastume then tied the score at 2-all after a nice give-and-go play with freshman Duncan McNabb and firing a shot from 10 yards past Zapata.
Oral Roberts (1-5-1) opened the scoring when Trey Vaut found an open net after an errant pass from an Air Force defender. The Golden Eagles made it 2-0 in the 64th minute when Jason Foster knocked in a rebound from 10 yards after Falcon goalie Mike Maynard made a save on a shot from Andrew Spencer.
The game was very physical, as each team had a player sent off with a red card, and four yellow cards were given as well. Falcon sophomore Matt Fry earned a seat on the bench in the 29th minute, while ORU's Bryan Campbell got a red card in the 41st minute.
Maynard made five saves in earning his second victory of the season for Air Force. Zapata made eight saves as the Falcons held a 12-7 advantage in shots on goal and took 26 total shots, compared to 15 for ORU.
In the first game of the day, Loyola Marymount also came back from an early 2-0 deficit thanks to goals from four different players. Lion goalie Shaun Kalnasy made nine saves as LMU improved to 5-2-1 this season. Bucknell fell to 3-4 despite a goal and an assist from Scott Visnic.
Air Force heads to the East Coast next weekend for a pair of matches at the Clemson Invitational. The Falcons take on Clemson on Friday, Sept. 26, then play Furman on Sunday, Sept. 28.
