USAF Academy, Colo. - The Air Force women's swim team defeated New Mexico 154-144, to win its Mountain West Conference home-opener in the Cadet Gymnasium's Natatorium. The win by the Falcons avenges a loss to the Lobos at the 2003 MWC Swimming Championships.
"I was a solid meet for us right down the line," Air Force head coach Casey Converse said. "We brought in only 16 swimmers into this dual meet which is a low number for us. So they all had to swim a lot of events and were steady throughout the entire meet."
Air Force led for almost the entire meet, holding the lead after 15 of the 16 events. New Mexico had its lone lead, 94-93, after the 10th event. The Falcons stormed back however, taking first-place in four of the last six events to earn the win and improve to 8-2 on the season.
Senior Carley Baxter led the way for Air Force, finishing first in three events. Individually, Baxter won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.64, and later the 100 free with a time of 54.03. Baxter also teamed with Lindsey Kirchhoff, Carly Omizo and Andrea Hyma to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.43).
Kirchhoff, Omizo and Hyma also teamed with Sara Crowell to win the 200 medley relay (1:49.26).
Crowell, Kirchhoff and Omizo also took home first-place finishes for the third time each by winning their respective individual events. Crowell took first in the 200 butterfly (2:15.21), Kirchhoff in the 100 backstroke (1:00.82) and Omizo in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.93).
Senior Lindsey Bauer and junior Jaymie Van Kooten also won their respective events. Bauer won the 200 breast with a time of 2:29.50, while Van Kooten took top honors in the 100 fly with a time of 58.48.
The Falcons return to action Saturday, Jan. 17, taking on UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev., for a Mountain West Conference dual meet with the AFA men's swim team.
