Two Air Force wrestlers were place-winners at the 2003 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Heath McKim (125 pounds) placed fourth overall, while Justin Gabbard (157 pounds) placed eighth at the event.
McKim got off to a great start, winning his first four matches. His first loss came in the semifinals, when he lost to Nebraska's Jason Powell, 4-1. In the third place match, McKim suffered a 9-2 loss to Efren Ceballos (Cal State-Bakersfield).
Gabbard, who missed several matches last year with an injury, got off to a solid start to the 2003-04 season by placing eight at the prestigious tournament. Gabbard won his four matches of the tournament, before suffering a tough one-point loss to Scott Garren (NC State). Gabbard lost his next match and in the seventh-place match, he suffered his second one-point loss of the tournament, falling 3-2 to Brian Stith (Arizona State).
McKim and several other Falcon grapplers will compete in the Midlands Invitational Dec. 28-29. The rest of the team will be off until Jan. 9, when the team travels west to compete in the Oregon Classic.
