Falcons Head To NCAA Regionals

The Air Force cross country team heads north this Saturday (Nov. 13) for the 2004 NCAA Mountain Region Championships. The regional race will take place at the Collindale Golf Course in Fort Collins, Colo. The Falcons will face several of the top teams in the country for the opportunity to advance to the national championships. The women's 6,000-meter race starts off the day at 11:00 a.m., while the start of the men's 8,000-meter race is slated for 12:15 p.m.
"RANK" YOU VERY MUCHThe Air Force men's cross country team dropped two places to 14th in the Nov. 2 national poll, as determined by the United States Cross Country Coaches Association. In the Mountain Region, the men remained in third place, behind Colorado (fourth, nationally) and BYU (ninth, nationally).
WHAT TO WATCH - ON THE MEN'S SIDESix of the men's teams competing in the NCAA Mountain Region Championships are ranked among the top-30 programs in the country, according to the latest national rankings. Colorado is currently ranked fourth, while BYU is ninth. Air Force is close behind at 14th-place. New Mexico (20th), Colorado State (25th) and Northern Arizona (28th) are all ranked among the nation's best.
WHAT TO WATCH - ON THE WOMEN'S SIDEOn the women's side of competition, two regional programs are ranked among the nation's elite, as Colorado is ranked third and BYU is ranked 11th in the national rankings. The Falcons are currently ranked 10th in the Mountain Region, according to the latest rankings by the Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association.
ALL-CONFERENCE ACCOLADESAbe Wengel, Brian Dumm, Mark Walter and Nick Wilson earned all-conference second team honors on the men's side, while Kelly Robinson became just the second Falcon to ever earn an all-conference nod on the women's side. Wengel claimed his third career all-conference selection, while Dumm, Walter and Wilson all picked up their second honor. Robinson's second-team selection is the first since Rachel Smith received second-team honors in 1999.
MEN TAKE SECOND AT MWC CHAMPIONSHIPSThe Falcons tallied 57 points to finish just behind BYU (39 points). Despite taking the top-two spots in the race, New Mexico finished third with 69 points and Colorado State took fourth with 75 points. Utah (127 points) and Wyoming (174 points) rounded out the competition, taking fifth and sixth, respectively.
WOMEN FINISH FIFTH AT CONFERENCE MEETThe Falcon women placed fifth with 121 points - just three points shy of fourth-place Utah. BYU picked up its sixth straight title with 24 points, while Colorado State (59 points) and Wyoming 97 points) rounded out the top three. New Mexico finished sixth with 163 points, while San Diego State (192 points) and UNLV (224 points) concluded the eight-team competition.
