Augustin Kamdem Earns Decision in New York

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Senior Augustin Kamdem (Yaounde, Cameroon) picked up the a victory for the Air Force boxing team on Monday, Nov. 22, at a meeting of nine National Collegiate Boxing Association schools at the prestigious New York Athletic Club in New York City.
Of the four bouts that a member of the Air Force team competed in, Kamdem was the only boxer to pick up a decision. The senior defeated John Baxter of Army in a 180-pound bout. Kamdem cut off the ring and landed several hard body shots to slow Baxter down. The senior was unable to reach Baxter with one big shot, so Kamdem resorted to combinations and his aggressive body attack to earn the decision.
Team captain Darren Smith (Laurel, Md.) opened the competition with a 125-pound bout -- up a weight class from his usual 119-pounds. Although Smith kept Nevada's Jose Cases against the ropes for much of the second and third rounds, two early point deductions cost the senior the decision.
In a rematch of the national quarterfinals from last season, senior Blake Baldi (Metamora, Ill.) faced off with Josh Mercado of Lock Haven in a 145-pound bout. Despite landing several hard rights, Baldi was not able to earn a decision.
Senior Mike Sackenheim (Hamilton, Ohio) took on Nevada's Ryan Healey -- the defending national champion at 165-pounds -- in a 168-pound contest. Sackenheim had lost a close match to Healey in a dual match last year, but appeared to be in control on Monday. He caught Healey with several repeated combinations, but the judges awarded a split decision to Healey when the final bell sounded.
After four straight competitions on the road, the Falcons return home to the Academy on Friday, Dec. 3, for their second Friday Night Fight competition of the season. The first bout is slated for 4:30 p.m., in the Cadet Gym Upper Boxing Room.
