Falcon Men Currently Third After Second Day At MWC Swimming & Diving Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Air Force men's swimming and diving team has currently moved up to third place with 225 points, trailing four-time defending conference champion BYU, and Utah at the Mountain West Conference Swimming & Diving Championships at Oklahoma City Community College. The Falcons women's team is seventh with 106 points.
Utah trails the Cougars, who lead with 305 points for the men and 251 for the women, in men's action with 280 points, followed by Air Force (225), UNLV (221) and Wyoming (186). The Rams hold the No. 2 spot in the women's events with 231 points, followed by UNLV (204), Utah (180), New Mexico (136), Wyoming (130), Air Force (106) and San Diego State (90).
In the 500 yard freestyle, freshman Chris Knaute was just edged by BYU's Zachary Anderson by .82 seconds despite swimming the second-fastest 500 free time in AFA history. Anderson swam a 4:25.40, while Knaute finished second with a time of 4:26.22.
Ben Chapman took fifth for the Falcons in the 3-meter diving competition with a finals score of 439.65. Doug Hulse took ninth (385.60) and Daniel Phenicie placed 13th (328.45).
In the 200 individual medley, Nick Burton finished fourth (1:51.52) and Eric Pounds (1:51.64) took fifth for the Falcons. Dustin Lapin took seventh in the 200 IM (1:51.94).
In the 50 freestyle Auston Ayres was the top finisher for AFA, taking ninth with a time of 21.08.
And in the final men's event for the day, the Falcon men took fourth in the 200 free relay. The group of Charles LeBeau, Ayres, Casey Bowen and Paul Brehm clocked in with a time of 1:23.63.
Day three events begin Friday, Feb. 20, with preliminary events at 10 a.m. CST and finals competition at 6 p.m. The MWC Swimming & Diving Championships conclude Saturday, Feb. 22, following the 6 p.m. finals events and the announcement of the individual and team awards.
