USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The 2004 Wing Open Championships continued on Wednesday, Feb. 25, with semifinal action at the Cadet West Gym. There were 18 bouts, with every boxer aiming for a place in the lineup for the Wing Open finals.
"These matches are so intense," head coach Eddie Weichers said, following the competition. "Each one of these boxers knows that they are just one bout away from the Wing Open finals. Next Sunday, at Clune Arena, is where they all want to be."
Junior Augustin Kamdem (Yaounde', Cameroon) was named the Academy's Boxer of Week after defeating Andrew Quijano in a semifinal bout of the 175-pound weight class. Kamdem earned the victory after the referee called the contest in the second round.
Kamdem will compete against James Mitchell, who won the other semifinal bout for that weight class. Geoff Woolf and Joshua Park won their respective bouts in the 132-weight division, while Luis Pena and Blake Baldi earned decisions at the 139-pound level. Marcos Gonzales won (rsc-2) his bout at 147-pounds, while Ryan Dorsey-Spitz earned a decision in the same class.
Troy Mangum earned a decision in the 156-pound semifinal bout, and will face Clell Knight, whose own bout was called in the second round. Both Mike Sackenheim and Leif Nordhagen's matches were decided in two rounds at the 165-pound weight class. Ryan Coates and Chris Collins each earned decisions at 185-pounds, while Oscar Casillas and Will Watson claimed victories at 195-pounds.
In the night's most spirited bouts, Brian Trumble and Joe Keller won their respective bouts in the heavyweight semifinals, both causing the referee to stop the contest in the second round.
The winners of tonight's semifinal bouts will face off at the 2004 Wing Open Championships, which will take place on Sunday, March 7, at 5 p.m., in Clune Arena.
