RENO, Nev. - Four members of the Air Force boxing team claimed victories in a meeting of the National Collegiate Boxing Association schools from the West region on Friday, Jan. 30, in Reno, Nev. The Falcons took four of nine scored bouts from competitors representing UNLV, Cal and Nevada at the El Dorado Hotel Ballroom - the site of the 2004 national championships.
"There was a nice group of boxers represented," Air Force boxing coach Eddie Weichers said. "They performed well in front of a hostile crowd and that experience will prove valuable as we turn our focus to the start of the anticipated Wing Open tournament."
For the second time in three weeks, freshman Willie Lloyd was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week. Lloyd gave up some weight to get the needed work against Cal's Dave Springer in a preliminary, non-scoring match. Using a good jab and a quick one-two combination, Lloyd was able to keep the aggressive Springer off-balance. He was able to move away from Springer's strong right lead and counter effectively.
"Willie is a good listener and a fast learner," Weichers commented. "When you're the smallest guy in the guy every day, you need to be smart and elusive."
Lloyd is just the third Falcon to be named Boxer of the Week on more than one occasion this season and remains the only non-junior or senior to earn the weekly honor.
The Falcons will now turn their attention to the annual Wing Open tournament. The festivities begin on Thursday, Feb. 12, with the preliminaries. All elimination rounds (preliminaries on Feb. 12; quarterfinals on Feb. 19 and semifinals on Feb. 25) will be held in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym. Each competition begins at 4 p.m., and admission is free.
The finals of the 2004 Wing Open will be on Sunday, March 7, at Clune Arena in the Cadet Field House. The first bout will start at 5 p.m., and again, admission is free.
