Falcons Win 25th Consecutive NCBA Regional Title

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Backed by six individual victories, the Air Force boxing team claimed its 25th consecutive National Collegiate Boxing Association regional championship on Saturday, March 20, in Berkeley, Calif. In addition to earning six gold medals, the Falcons earned four silvers and two bronze.
The Falcons recorded 72 points - more than double the points earned by the runner-up team from UNLV (35 points). Nevada posted 27 points to finish third, while Cal-Berkeley, Santa Clara and San Jose State rounded out the competition.
Air Force recorded six individual event victories, while UNLV, Nevada and Cal-Berkeley each garnered two.
Freshman Willie Lloyd (Columbia, S.C.) won his 112-pound bout over Moon Kim of UNLV, while junior Darren Smith (Laurel, Md.) defeated Daigo Moki of Nevada at 119-pounds.
In his second fight in as many days, Augustin Kamdem (Yaounde, Cameroon) defeated Mike Harvey from Santa Clara at 175-pounds. Like Kamdem, Ryan Coates competed in his second bout of the weekend, defeating Cal-Berkeley's Bobby Bolger at 185-pounds when the referee stopped the contest in the third round.
Senior Will Watson (Los Angeles, Calif.) earned a decision over Yevgeny Korsenov of UNLV at 196-pounds and classmate Brian Trumble (Pittsburgh, Pa.) received the victory over John Lorman of Nevada in the night's heavyweight bout.
Air Force earned four runner-up finishes on the night. Sophomore Luis Pena (Laredo, Texas) fell in a 132-pound match to Cal's Todd Gaylord, while junior Blake Baldi (Peoria, Ill.) lost in the 139-pound bout to Dave Bermudez of UNLV. Senior Clell Knight (Justiceburg, Texas) finished second to Joey Massa of UNLV at 156-pounds, while classmate Leif Nordhagen (Sun Prairie, Wis.) was the runner-up to Nevada's Ryan Healy.
The six Air Force regional winners, as well as the four second-place finishers advance to the NCBA national championships, which are to be held on April 1-3 at the El Dorado Hotel in Reno, Nev. Third-place finishers Ryan Dorsey-Spitz (Pueblo, Colo.) and Ezekiel Ignaco (Waukegan, Ill.) are currently at-large bids for the national finals.
