The Air Force men's lacrosse team suffered a disappointing loss on Saturday at Army, falling 11-10 in overtime. The Falcons held a two-goal advantage with just over two minutes remaining in the game, but the Black Knights would score twice late, including a game-tying goal by John Walker with 36 seconds remaining. Jake Couch scored the game winner 1:48 into sudden death overtime.
"It was a tough loss," head coach Fred Acee said. "We didn't take care of the ball when we needed to. We made two unforced turnovers late in the game and that cost us the victory."
Freshman Justin Kuchta opened the scoring with the first of his four goals. William Meister and William Keleher each added a goal and the Falcons held a 3-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Army bounced back with two second quarter goals, but John Smith scored to give the Falcons a 4-3 halftime lead.
Army out-scored the Falcons 5-4 in the third quarter and the teams were tied heading into the final stanza. Kuchta scored twice and Meister added a goal and the Falcons held and 10-8 lead with just over two minutes remaining, but they couldn't hold the lead.
Justin Pavoni finished the game with 17 saves. Kuchta led the Falcons in scoring with four goals. Keleher and Meister each notched a goal, while Michael Colosimo and Smith had one apiece. It was the second consecutive year that Army defeated the Falcons in overtime. Last season, they won 8-7 in double OT.
"Our players worked hard and deserved a better fate," Acee said. "We need to bounce back and get ready for North carolina next week."
Air Force falls to 2-1 overall. They will host North Carolina on Thursday (March 11) in the team's home opener.
