COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Air Force track and field program opened competition at the 2004 NCAA Midwest Regional in College Station, Texas, on Friday, May 28. There were 11 Falcons that competed in several event finals, as well as the preliminary rounds of some races.
Sophomore Mark Walter (League City, Texas) finished sixth out of 19 competitors in the preliminaries of the 1500-meter run, crossing the finish line in a qualifying time of 3:53.85. Senior Sean Temple (Monument, Colo.) also advanced into tomorrow's finals, after an eighth-place finish in the preliminary round of the 110-meter hurdles. Clocking in at 14.13, Temple finished second in his heat of competitors.
Also competing in the 110-meter hurdle prelims were seniors Luke Marker (Manson, Wash.) and Jim Campbell (Portage, Mich.). Marker took 15th with a time of 14.27, while Campbell finished 22nd, with a time of 14.44.
Campbell and Temple also joined junior Kory Pearson (Beavercreek, Ohio) in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles. Campbell registered the best time of the trio, clocking a 52.67 to finish 19th. Pearson finished 25th (53.44), while Temple placed 27th (53.56).
A trio of distance runners competed in the 5000-meter run finals. Seniors Ben Payne (Arvada, Colo.) and Chris Acs (Niles, Ohio) finished 13th (14:46.61) and 14th (14:47.12), respectively, while junior Brian Dumm (Fairfax, Va.) was right behind them at 14:48.12 to finish 15th.
Senior thrower Jason McNeal (Woods Cross, Utah) finished 13th in the hammer throw, tossing a distance of 186'7" - the third-best throw in the first flight of athletes.
Junior Dominique Boivin (Shoreline, Wash.) and freshman Olivia Korte (Seneca, Kan.) were the only members of the women's team that competed today. In the discus throw, Boivin finished 18th, with a throw of 154'1", while Korte placed 25th after a toss of 145'10".
The NCAA Midwest Regional Championships conclude tomorrow (May 29) on the campus of Texas A&M University, beginning at noon CDT. Walter and Temple will compete in the finals of their respective events, while 11 more Falcons will take to the competition field in five events.
