Paul Gensic and Dana Pounds Qualify For NCAA Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Junior Paul Gensic (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and sophomore Dana Pounds (Lexington, Ky.) both qualified for the 2004 NCAA Championships with Academy record-setting performances at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in College Station, Texas, on Saturday, May 29.
Gensic cleared an Academy record mark of 17'11" on his first attempt at that height to win the pole vault competition. He surpassed the previous record of 17'10?" that former Falcon Marcus Nichols set in 1996. The mark of 17'11" is also a new NCAA Midwest Regional record.
Throwing a 172'11" to break her own Academy record, Pounds finished second in the javelin throw behind Katy Doyle of Texas A&M - the defending regional javelin throw champion. Pounds' mark topped the distance of 172'1" that she set at the Drake Relays on April 23.

The pole vault had the most Falcon representatives with four, including Gensic. Junior Makisi Haleck (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) tied for sixth after clearing a mark of 16'11" in the first round of competition, but was unable to clear the opening-height of 17'0" in a tie-breaking jump off with Northern Iowa's Jarno Kivioja. Classmate Christian Morgan (Henderson, Nev.) finished eighth with a mark of 16'5?". Sophomore Jason Jones (Park City, Utah) also competed, but did not place after failing to clear the opening height.
Aside from Pounds, Air Force had two other competitors in the javelin throw - both of which recorded top-10 finishes. Junior Lacy DeWall (Bismarck, N.D.) finished seventh with a throw of 150'3", while freshman Caitie Holliday (Kalispell, Mont.) threw a 148'4" to finish ninth in her first regional competition.
Competing in the men's javelin, freshman Brandon Murphy (Leawood, Kan.) finished 11th, with a throw of 197'8". It was the third-best throw in the first flight of competitors.
In the men's triple jump, senior Chris Banks (Culpeper, Va.) finished 11th, with a distance of 49'3", while classmate Anthony Park (Las Vegas, Nev.) placed 12th, behind a distance of 48'10?". Park finished third among the first flight of competitors, while Banks took ninth in the second flight.
Sophomore Texas-native Mark Walter (League City) finished ninth in the finals of the 1500-meter run, crossing the finish line in a time of 3:55.19. Senior Sean Temple (Monument, Colo.) also competed today, finishing ninth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.15.
Also competing for the women's team in the 3000-meter steeplechase, was senior Jean Taylor (Florissant, Mo.), who finished ninth with a time of 11:07.13.
The NCAA Championships will run June 9-12 in Austin, Texas.
