AUSTIN, Texas - Air Force sophomore Dana Pounds (Lexington, Ky.) became the first female All-American in the Division I history of the track and field program, as she finished fifth in the javelin throw at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field program in Austin, Texas, on Friday, June 11.
Pounds posted a mark of 170'4" on her third throw of the day to earn the fifth-place mark. Three of her six throws were farther than 50 meters and the remaining three cleared 45 meters. Pounds topped the sixth-place finished by nearly five feet.
She is the 50th individual All-American selection at the Academy in the program's 47-year history, as well as the first javelin All-American (male or female). While Pounds is the first female Division I athlete to earn the elite status, she joins 26 others who earned All-America honors at the Division II level.
The 2004 national championship was won by Katy Doyle of Texas A&M, whom Pounds finished second to at the Midwest Regional Championships last week.
Competition concludes tomorrow (June 12) at the Mike A. Meyers Stadium on the University of Texas campus, when Paul Gensic (Fort Wayne, Ind.) competes in the finals of the pole vault at 6:45 p.m. CST.
