AUSTIN, Texas - The opening day of competition at the 2004 NCAA Track and Field Championships was halted due to severe weather in Austin, Texas; causing Air Force sophomore javelin thrower Dana Pounds (Lexington, Ky.) to wait until tomorrow (June 10) for the completion of her event.
Pounds finished second in the first flight of 14 competitors, but heavy rain and lightning strikes in the area kept the second group of athletes from competing. The top 12 finishers are scheduled to compete in the finals on Friday (June 11) at 8:15 p.m.
With lightning in the area that caused several evacuations of Mike A. Myers Stadium and delays totaling over nine hours, only one of the 29 scheduled preliminary events was completed.
Junior Paul Gensic (Fort Wayne, Ind.) is also scheduled to compete in the pole vault tomorrow at 2 p.m.
