Dana Pounds Wins NACAC Javelin Title

SHERBROOKE, Canada - Air Force All-American Dana Pounds (Lexington, Ky.) concluded a stellar sophomore season by winning the javelin throw at the NCACA-TELUS Under-23 Track and Field Championships in Sherbrooke, Canada, on Friday, July 30. With her gold medal throw of 174'4", Pounds broke the Academy record for the fifth time this season.
Once again, the junior-to-be separated herself from the competition, as the second-place finisher (Ana-Erika Gutierrez of Mexico) tossed a 162'4". The third-annual NCACA Championships featured over 350 athletes from 28 countries around North America, Central America and the Caribbean (the NCACA athletic association).
Pounds' amazing javelin season included a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships where she became the Falcons' first Division I All-American, a sixth-place finish at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and first-place finish at the Mountain West Conference championships.
"Dana's year has been truly remarkable," field events coach Scott Irving said. "To throw internationally for the first time and maintain such a high competitive level is a credit to her training commitment throughout the summer. She didn't go into this competition as the highest ranked thrower, but she came out on top."
