The ninth-ranked Creighton men's soccer team scored three goals in the first 13 minutes of play Saturday night as the Bluejays cruised to a 3-1 victory over Air Force in front of 2,925 fans at the Creighton Soccer Field. The win moves the Jays record to 6-1-0 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 4-2-1.
The Bluejays scored the first three goals of the match, with Tim Bohnenkamp getting on the board first. The midfielder took a direct free kick from the top of the box and buried it in the back of the net at 3:38 for his third goal of the year.
CU struck again just over one minute later. Joan Carvajal netted his first collegiate goal at the 4:46 minute mark. The rookie knocked a one-timer in off a header pass from Julian Nash. Vince Odorisio set up the play by lofting the ball into the box.
Jarod Tarver concluded the Bluejay scoring in the 13th minute when he scored his third goal of the season. He took a feed from Nash and snuck the ball past Falcon goalkeeper Paul Elsbernd at the 12:38 mark. After that goal, junior Mike Maynard replaced Elsbernd in the net.
The Falcons tried to climb their way back into the match, scoring in the 30th minute to cut the CU lead to two. Senior Marcus Sagastume tallied the lone goal for the Falcons at the 29:35 mark. Sagastume's fourth goal of the season was set up when a back pass by the Bluejays bounced off the post and went back into an empty goal area.
Sagatume is now ninth on Air Force's career scoring list with 78 points (25g, 28a). His 28 assists places him No. 3 on the school's all-time list.
Air Force continued to try to fight back, launching 17 shots on the night. CU goalkeeper Andrew Brown was up to the challenge, stopping five shots to record his fifth win of the year. Elsbernd made one save and Maynard made two for Air Force.
Air Force begins Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play next Friday, Oct. 1 as it hosts Sacramento State at Cadet Soccer Stadium beginning at 7 p.m.
