Air Force Welcomes Back Friday Night Fights

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- Air Force boxing returned to the Academy this weekend with an exciting round of Friday Night Fights on Jan. 14 in the Cadet Gym. After over a month hiatus from competition, due to exams and the holiday break, the Falcons returned to action with 15 thrilling, hard-fought bouts.
The night featured many intense, closely-matched bouts, as everyone vied to put their name on the board of "Champs and Challengers". The lapse of time between competitions also contributed to the high-level energy that was found within the boxing room.
"All around, the matches were well contested," head coach Eddie Weichers said. "Two bouts (Chris Johnson vs. Nate Carden and Patrick Wanko vs. Thad Ewing) were reminiscent of yesteryear. They stood toe-to-toe to the delight of the crowd. It was a good ol' no-holds-barred throw down!"
In the two "old-school" bouts, Carden left the ring victorious at 183-pounds, while Ewing earned the decision over Wanko at 185-pounds. Another highlight bout was in the 140-pound match-up, where James Baker defeated roommate Lonnie Ash.
Nine of the remaining 11 matches ended with decisions. Mike Sackenheim (168-lbs.), Chris Collins (191-lbs.), Austin Street (159-lbs.), Colin LaFavor (193-lbs.), Pat Parrish (160-lbs.), Marcos Gonzales (195-lbs.), Cliff Moore (165-lbs.), Chris Culver (165-lbs.) and Evin Negron (175-lbs.) all took decisions in their bouts. Brock Predovich and Joe Conrad earned decisions at the 212-pounds and 169-pounds, respectively, after the referee stopped the contest in the second round of both bouts.
Junior Luis Pena was named the Academy's Boxer of Week following a decision over classmate Colt Schiefelbein in the 146-pound contest. Matching up with the stronger Schiefelbein, Pena used an effective body attack to slow him down. Using a strong left hook and sharp combinations, Pena put together a nice string of punches to defeat Schiefelbein.
Air Force wraps up its annual Friday night intra-squad bouts on Jan. 21. The Falcons will host their final Friday Night Fights of the season at 4:30 p.m., in the Cadet Gym Upper Boxing Room.
