The Air Force golf team heads to Las Cruces, N.M., for the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, hosted by New Mexico State, Oct. 31-Nov. 1. The event, which is being held at the NMSU Golf Course, includes two rounds Monday, beginning with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start, while the tournament concludes with a single round on Tuesday.
Last Time Out...
Earlier this week, the Falcons headed to Roanoke, Texas, for the 13th-annual Service Academy Golf Classic, featuring rivals Army and Navy. After a battle with the Black Knights for the early lead, Air Force turned in a strong performance in the final round to claim its 11th-consecutive Reemtsma Trophy, given to the event's yearly team champion.
Leading the way for the Falcons was sophomore Tyler Labrum, who finished in second place at even-par after firing a 69 in the third round. Three other Falcons--junior Tyler Goulding (3rd), sophomore Bob Whitney (T5th) and senior captain Scott Redmond (7th)--earned All-SAGC honors for their performances.
Rounding out the group for Air Force were freshman Andrew Gibson (8th), sophomore Jared Freeman (T10th) and junior Chad Follett (T17th).
The Field...
The field for the 2005 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate features 16 teams, including 10 which are ranked among the top 100 in the latest Golfweek ratings. Following is a list of the teams slated to compete, with current rankings in parentheses: Air Force, Arizona (43), Idaho, Michigan (62), New Mexico (30), New Mexico State (71), Northern Colorado (99), Southern Utah, Texas (29), UT Arlington (52), Utah (83), Utah State, Weber State (78), Western New Mexico, Wyoming and Xavier (41).
In the Ratings...
Air Force is rated 123rd in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin team performance ratings, while junior Tyler Goulding leads the Falcons in the individual ratings at 114. The Sagarin rankings are based on power rating, schedule strength, schedule rank and records.
A New Leader...
In addition to helping Air Force secure its 11th-straight victory at the annual Service Academy Golf Classic, sophomore Tyler Labrum accomplished something else with his second-place finish at last week's SAGC. He broke junior Tyler Goulding's streak of 13 straight events as the Falcons' top performer. The last time an Air Force golfer other than Goulding had led the team was at the 2004 Service Academy Golf Classic, when Ben Jackman tied for first.
Up Next...
The Falcons wrap up the fall season Nov. 7-9, when they travel to the University of Hawaii Fall Invitational at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
