James Baker and Trevor Cook Collect Wins at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Senior James Baker and junior Trevor Cook earned victories for the Air Force boxing team, as the Falcons opened the 2005-06 season with a showdown at Navy on Friday, Oct. 7, in Annapolis, Md. Baker picked up a decision in a 139-pound contest with Navy's Nick Tawill, the national silver medalist one season ago, while Cook collected his decision over Vic Colon in a 165-pound bout.
It was a long day for the Falcons, who began their cross-country trek from the Academy to Annapolis at 5 a.m., on the morning of the competition.
"Despite the adversity, I was proud of our team's effort," head coach Eddie Weichers said on his return to the Academy. "We had some young prospects and several new guys that I needed to get a good look at. I wish the outcomes would have been more favorable, but everyone boxed hard and we have things we can build on."
For his individual efforts against the 2005 NCBA runner-up, Baker was named the season's first Boxer of the Week. Baker got off to the early lead over his taller competitor, behind several good combinations and a hard right. Although weary by the final round, Baker held off some counters and toughed it out to earn the decision.
Cook picked up the Falcons' other victory, following his decision over Colon. Cook used good pressure to claim the hard-fought decision over the talented Navy newcomer.
Seven other Falcons competed in the annual bout, but were unable to collect any more wins.
Sophomore Daryn Nelson succumbed to defending national champion Jeremy Biggs in a hard-fought 147-pound contest. Coming out strong, Nelson got Biggs' attention early and the two had some fierce exchanges. Although neither backed off, Biggs began to use his experience to catch Nelson with a hard right in the third. Shaking it off, Nelson fired two more shots at the closing bell, showing he will become a force in the future.
Freshman Nicholas Goc dropped a 142-pound decision to Ronnie Wilburn and junior Jahmil Edwards dropped a decision to Dan Leahey in the 147-pound division. Senior Richard Davis lost a decision to Brian Smith, while junior Mark Ruther's 165-pound bout with Nick Carter was stopped by the referee in the second round. In the upper weight classes, freshman Alex LaBaron lost a decision at 195-pounds to Derek Herrera, while sophomore John Quinn dropped a heavyweight decision to David Paddock.
"You always hate to come up short against the Navy team," Weichers continued. "The matches were good and I was pleased to see how our guys reacted under fire and in hostile territory."
The Falcons return to the friendly confines of the Academy on Friday, Oct. 14, for the first of seven Friday Night Fight contests. Action begins in the Cadet Gym Upper Boxing Room at 4:30 p.m.
