Air Force Takes Six of Nine Bouts From Army
11/4/2005 12:00:00 AM | Boxing
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force boxing team picked up six victories in a nine-bout contest with service academy rival Army on Friday, Nov. 4, in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym. The Falcons earned five unanimous decisions and senior captain Luis Pena picked up a victory when the referee stopped his contest in the first round.

Air Force got off to the slow start, as Army took the first two decisions. Freshman Miguel Valenzuela dropped a 117-pound decision to Army's Mike Benedossa, despite a flurry of punches in the second round. Army's Russ Calloway claimed the 142-pound contest from freshman Travis Miller.

"I was please to get some work for the freshmen," head coach Eddie Weichers said. "They both showed a lot of heart and desire in their first collegiate inter-service contest. Both Miguel and Travis were disappointed with the outcomes, but I feel the experience will make them more determined in the future."

Sophomore Clifford Moore kept Army's Craig Baer against the ropes for much of the opening round en route to a unanimous decision in the 160-pound weight class. Moore's victory sparked the Falcons, who picked up five of the next six.

Pena quickly dispatched of Dave Bounds in the 144-pound bout. Shortly after the first bell, the Falcons' captain landed a punch that sent Bounds to the mat and caused the referee to stop the contest in the first.

Sophomore Bruce Jamison pushed Army's Vinnie Rivera around the ring and kept up the jabs until the very end to earn the unanimous decision from the bout's three judges. Army's Kory Kastl ruined the Falcons sweep on the final bouts, as he picked up the decision junior Dustin Mayne in the first of two 185-pound contests.

The second 185-pound bout featured sophomore Chris Johnson taking the decision from Army's Alex Rendon. Junior Evin Negon -- who has been spending the semester at West Point as a part of the cadet exchange program -- defeated sparring mate Leon Perry in the evening's second 175-pound bout.

Senior Oscar Casillas closed out the night with three good rounds in the 195-pound finale to defeat Army's Andy Wassel. Respecting Wassel's jab in the onset, Casillas found his range near the first bell. His body shots allowed Casillas to get close and build a lead behind some good combinations. Finding his rhythm by the third round, Casillas was in a nice flow and earned the decision. For his efforts, Casillas was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week.

The Falcons remain at the Academy next week for a round of Friday Night Fights. Action begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym.
