Air Force Boxers Step Up During Friday Night Fights

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- It was another strong showing in the ring, as the Air Force boxing team concluded a round of Friday Night Fights on Dec. 2 in the Cadet Gym's Upper Boxing Room. Nine bouts were contested, three of which ended before the final bell. In the end, John Quinn earned the team's Boxer of the Week honors following a hard-hitting heavyweight contest with Grant Thomas.
Using a good jab and counter right, Quinn was able to keep his aggressive 255-pound opponent in the center of the ring. The coaching staff credited his movement and ring generalship as key factors in his unanimous decision victory.
"John is constantly improving, as he learns to relax and pick his spots," assistant coach Capt Erwin Vargas said following the bout.
Joe Conrad opened the evening with a unanimous decision over Trevor Cook in a 170 pound bout. Bruce Jamison picked up the night's next victory with a split decision over Mark Ruther at 175 pounds. Daryn Nelson followed with a unanimous victory over Jeff Shehan at 160 pounds.
Luis Pena took care of Jahmil Edwards in a 152-pound match-up, when the referee stopped their contest in the second round. Clifford Moore also earned an early victory, as the referee stopped his 162-pound contest with James Dunn in the third.
Following Quinn's decision over Thomas, Jon Andresen claimed a unanimous win over Elon Brumfield at 180 pounds. Dustin Mayne quickly claimed a quick win over Ben Golata at 190 pounds, when the referee stopped that bout not long after the opening bell. Mike Bosack closed out the night with a hard-fought split decision victory over James Gilchrist at 175 pounds.
"This was another great showing for all of the boxers," Vargas continued. "A lot of guys really stepped up and took it to their opponents. It was a great showcase of the skills and higher degree of conditioning."
Air Force wraps up the fall semester with another round of Friday Night Fights on Dec. 9 at 4:30 p.m., in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym.
