USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- With everyone wanting to make an impact heading into a five-week hiatus from the weekly Friday Night Fights, the Air Force boxing team closed out the fall semester on Dec. 9 with 11 hard-fought matches. No one was willing to go down easily as 10 of the 11 bouts lasted until the final bell.
Trevor Cook was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week after claiming a unanimous decision over Mark Ruther in a 171-pound showdown. Using a stiff jab and good head movement, Cook was able to land some hard scoring blows throughout the match. He kept a strong, steady pace, pushing the action until the end.
Making his first Friday Night Fights appearance of the season, Ian Tuznik opened the evening with a unanimous decision over John Quinn in a heavyweight bout. Dustin Mayne claimed a split decision over Chris Johnson at 185 pounds, while Adam Terns earned a split victory over Harvey White at 135 pounds.
Delwyn Campo took a decision from Shaun Cievas in a 145-pound showdown, while Nicholas Goc won unanimously over Matthew Johnson at 140 pounds. Following Cook's decision over Ruther, Rudy Bowen unanimously decisioned Daryn Nelson at 156 pounds.
Colin LaFavor claimed a split decision over Bruce Jamison, before Richard Davis and Cliff Moore earned unanimous wins over their respective competitors. Davis defeated Ryan Price at 153 pounds, while Moore used a good body shot to bring down Austin Almand in a 162-pound bout.
The evening's final bout was the only contest that didn't go to the final bell, as Kellen Griswold defeated David Simon when the referee stopped the contest in the second round.
"It was another great showing for the Air Force boxing team," the coaching staff of Eddie Weichers and Capt Erwin Vargas said following the contest. "There were many tough bouts tonight, with a lot of the boxers landing hard shots to the body and also relying on their jab to take control of the action."
With finals and the end of the semester just around the corner, the Falcons are off from competition until Jan. 13, when they host another round of Friday Night Fights in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym. Start time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
