Falcons Split Weekend Contest in Seattle

SEATTLE, Wash. -- The Air Force boxing team split a weekend competition at the Washington Athletic Club in Seattle, Wash., on Saturday, Jan. 29. Three of the six boxers claimed decisions in a meet that had the Falcons facing off with athletes from other National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) schools.
Sophomore Willie Lloyd (Columbia, S.C.) got the Falcons off on the right foot, using good pressure and jabs to claim the decision over Army's Mike Benedosso in a 112-pound bout. It was the second time this year that these two boxers have met in the ring, with Lloyd able to avenge an early November loss to Benedosso. Senior captain Darren Smith (Laurel, Md.) followed that up with a decision over Miami-Ohio's Will Geiger at 125-pounds.
Junior James Baker (Inverness, Fla.) suffered a loss by Nevada-Reno's Dave Schacter at 132-pounds, but senior Mike Sackenheim (Hamilton, Ohio) responded with a victory over Army's Matt Pride at 165-pounds. In a match-up of two boxers with nearly identical styles and a dead-even contest heading into the third round, Sackenheim was able to earn the close decision.
The Falcons closed out the contest with consecutive losses, as Navy's Amir Shareef topped senior Augustin Kamdem (Yaounde', Cameroon) at 180-pounds and Henry Namauu of UNLV defeated senior Brock Predovich in a 200-pound match-up.
Smith earned his second Boxer of the Week honor of the season, after earning the decision over Geiger at 125-pounds. Starting out fast, Smith won the first round big, after overpowering Geiger and forcing a standing eight count. Smith used his aggressive attack and speed to control the match from start to finish.
Air Force returns to action on Friday (Feb. 4) with another round of NCBA bouts at the El Dorado Hotel in Reno, Nev. The first bout is slated for 7 p.m.
