USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The march to the 2005 Wing Open Championships got underway tonight (Feb. 10) with five exciting preliminary bouts, including four in the 156-pound weight division. A place in the quarterfinals was on the line tonight for these 10 tough competitors.
The first four bouts featured athletes fighting for a spot in the 156-pound bracket. Austin Street got the contest going with a decision over Jose Garcia. Clifford Moore also picked up decision over James Dunn. Jahmil Edwards earned a split decision over Richard Davis, while Daryn Nelson won his bout over Ikedinachi Akagah when the referee stopped the contest in the first round.
In the night's lone bout at 185-pounds, Dustin Long earned a split decision over Colin LaFavor.
Adam Vance also advanced to the 156-pound quarterfinals, after winning by a walkover.
Nelson was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week following the match. Coming to the boxing program from the wrestling team, he showed good composure and deceptive power against Akagah. Midway through the first round, Nelson caught Akagah with a sharp left and sent him to the mat several seconds later. Although Akagah was up at the five count, the referee stopped the bout to give Nelson his first boxing victory.
