Hard-Hitting Action Continues At the Wing Open Quarterfinals

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The road to the Wing Open Championships intensified tonight (Feb. 17) with 13 action packed bouts of quarterfinal action in the Cadet Gym's Upper Boxing Room. With 26 boxers vying for a spot in the semifinals, the night proved to be closely contested and highly spirited.
Taylor Gifford opened the night with a unanimous decision over Mike Chua in the 147-pound decision.
Marcos Gonzales was one of four bouts in the 156-pound weight class, earning a decision over Austin Street, before Adam Vance won his contest with Clifford Moore when the referee stopped the contest in the third round. Trevor Cook advanced with a unanimous decision over Jahmil Edwards, while Nathan Dawson took a split decision from Daryn Nelson.
In the night's lone bout at 165 pounds, Mark Ruther earned a split decision over Ruben Ihiut-Ruiz to advance next week's action.
Augustin Kamdem earned a unanimous decision over Jay Page in a 175-pound contest, while Bruce Jamison took a split decision from Dustin Mayne in the other 175-pound match.
There were two 185-pound bouts contested tonight, with Chris Johnson earning the decision over Scott Giles and Sean Mitchell moved on with a unanimous decision over Dustin Long.
The final two bouts were hard-hitting contests at the 195-pound level. John Carberry advanced with a decision over fellow CS-13 member Nate Carden and Brock Predovich claimed a quick victory over Zack Steiner, when the referee stopped the match before the first round ended.
Following the match, the Air Force coaching staff and officials named Vance the Academy's Boxer of the Week. Using a well-paced attack against the allusive Moore, he was able to remain poised throughout the bout. Picking his shots, Vance was able to find Moore with several hard rights in the second round. Those shots gave him the momentum and caused the referee to call the contest early.
The annual Wing Open Tournament continues Wednesday, Feb. 23, with the semifinals. Action begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Cadet Gym's Upper Boxing Room.
