RENO, Nev. -- Collecting a record of 7-3 against members of other National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) schools, the Air Force boxing team wrapped up the regular season on Friday (Feb. 4) in Reno, Nev. Sophomore Ezekiel Ignaco was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week after earning a decision in a 125-pound bout.
The Falcons opened the contest with three straight losses, but quickly rebounded to roll out seven straight wins -- four of which were called before the final bell.
Joe Conrad picked up the team's first victory of the night, as he earned a decision at 165-pounds over Chad Edralin of UNLV. It was the last decision from the Falcons for awhile, as the next four boxers claimed the win before the end of the third round.
Blake Baldi won his bout when the referee stopped the contest in the second round...as did Austin Street and J.J. Homan. Baldi won the 147-pound bout over Alex Solorzano of San Fransisco, while Street topped Solorzano's teammate, Edgar Mayora, in a 156-pound bout. Homan took down Nevada's Tristen Rivera in a 125-pound contest.
Chris Collins earned a victory in a 185-pound contest, when the referee stopped his contest with Santa Clara's Mike Harvey in the third round.
Ignaco picked up his first Boxer of the Week honor after taking a decision in the 125-pound weight class. Using a powerful left hand lead early in the bout, Ignaco got early respect from Nevada's Jose Casas. He continued to use jabs and one-two combinations to keep Casas confused.
"Zeke came in prepared and had his game face on for all three rounds," head coach Eddie Weichers stated. "We were please with the poise and discipline shown. We look for continued improvement from this talented sophomore."
With the instruction from the coaching staff of "go out in round one and start a fight", Ian Tuznik avenged last year's loss to Nevada's John Lorman in a heavyweight competition, earning the decision to close out the contest.
Air Force returns to the Academy this Thursday (Feb. 10) for the opening round of the Wing Open tournament. The first bout of the preliminary competition is slated for 4:30 p.m., in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym.
The next several weeks of intra-wing competition leads up to the Wing Open Championships on Sunday, March 6, in Clune Arena. The champions of the finals will represent the Academy in the regional tournament (March 15-20 in Reno, Nev.) with the hopes of advancing to the national tournament on March 31-April 2 at the Academy in Clune Arena.
