RENO, Nev. -- Backed by five gold medalists, the Air Force boxing team claimed its 26th consecutive regional title at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) West Regional Championships on Saturday, March 19, at the El Dorado Hotel in Reno, Nev.
With 64 team points, the Falcons easily won the team title to continue their win streak. Nevada finished a distant second with 39 points, to edge out UNLV, who finished third with 31 points.
Air Force claimed five gold medals on the night, spanning the weight divisions. Sophomore Willie Lloyd (Columbia, S.C.) claimed the 112-pound title after earning a decision over Moon Kim of UNLV. At 119 pounds, senior Darren Smith (Laurel, Md.) earned the title with a decision over Nevada's Daigo Moki.
Jumping to the heavier weight classes, senior Augustin Kamdem (Yaounde, Cameroon) claimed the gold medal at 175-pounds with a decision over Eric Roy of UNLV. Classmate Chris Collins (Grayson, Ky.) earned a decision over San Jose State's Nnamd Iwuagwu to win the 185-pound title. Fellow senior Brock Predovich (Canon, City, Colo.) claimed first-place accolades at 195 pounds, taking a decision from Henry Namuu of UNLV.
The Falcons also received four silver medals during tonight's championship round. Sophomore Ezekiel Ignaco (Waukegan, Ill.) finished second by decision to Nevada's Jose Cassas at 125 pounds, while junior Luis Pena (Laredo, Texas) lost a decision to Daniel Reese of UNLV at 139-pounds. Senior Mike Sackenheim (Hamilton, Ohio) was the runner-up to Nevada's Ryan Healy and sophomore Ian Tuznik (Niceville, Fla) lost to John Moorman, when the referee stopped their contest in the third round.
The nine gold and silver medalists, along with Brian Navin (Boston, Mass.), Blake Baldi (Metamora, Ill.) and Adam Vance (Leawood, Kan.) -- the three bronze medalists who competed on Friday night -- advance to the NCBA National Championships, which will be held March 31-April 2 at the Academy.
