USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- Five members of the Air Force boxing team advanced to the final round of the National Collegiate Boxing Association tournament on Friday, April 1, during semifinal round action. Twenty-four hotly contested battles raged at Clune Arena, where a trip to the championship was on the line.
Sophomore Willie Lloyd (Columbia, S.C.) opened the night with a commanding decision over Army's Mike Benedosso. (The win put Lloyd at 2-1 this season over his Army counterpart.) With a flurry of punches, senior Darren Smith (Laurel, Md.) advanced to the finals following a decision over Navy's Jonathon Liang in the first 119-pound contest.
Freshman Brian Navin (Boston, Mass.) dropped a very close decision to Navy's Nick Tawil at 132-pounds, but showed great promise for the coming years.
Junior Luis Pena (Laredo, Texas) got the Falcons back to the winning ways, taking a hard-fought decision from Lock Haven's Josh Mercado in the first 139-pound semifinal. Senior Blake Baldi (Peoria, Ill.) also advanced to the finals at 147-pounds, taking another hard-hitting decision from Nevada's Thomas Gennaro.
Moving to the heavier weights, senior Augustin Kamdem (Yaounde, Cameroon) lost a controversial decision to Army's Ovidiu Iacob at 175-pounds, while classmate Chris Collins (Grayson, Ky.) dropped a decision to Navy's Chris Lonero at 185-pounds.
Senior Brock Predovich (Canon City, Colo.) picked up a victory for the Falcons at 195-pounds, downing the Navy's Greg Watten -- last year's national champion in the 185-pound weight class. Despite a dominating third round, sophomore Ian Tuznik (Niceville, Fla.) fell in the final heavyweight round of the night to Maryland's Luke Runion.
In other semifinal round action, defending 112-pound champion Moon Kim advanced to the finals, as did 119-pound Will Geiger from Miami (Ohio). Nevada's Jose Casas will face off with Navy's Jeremy Biggs in the 125-pound final, while Dave Schacter of Nevada advanced in the 132-pound weight class. Daniel Reese of UNLV won his contest at 139-pounds to advance to the finals, while California's Todd Gaylord (last year's national champion at 132-pounds) advanced by decision to the 147-pound finals.
Army's Matt Pride won his contest at 156-pounds and will face Navy's Alejandro Loya who won his bout by decision. Nevada's Ryan Healy won a closely disputed split decision at 165-pounds to advance to the finals with a chance to retain his national title. Healy will face Greg Murrell of UNLV who won the second contest in that weight class.
Defending 175-pound national champion Amir Shareef of Navy advanced to the finals after taking the first referee-stopped-contest of the night. Reggie Smith qualified for the finals at 185-pounds with a decision in his bout. Kentucky's Chad Gilpin claimed a decision in the second 195-pound bout to advance to the finals. Defending heavyweight champion Wes Baer of Army advanced to the finals following a referee-stopped-contest.
Action at the NCBA Championships concludes tomorrow (April 2) with the final 12 bouts. The first punch is set to be thrown at 6:00 p.m., in Clune Arena at the Cadet Field House.
