Air Force Men Win Jack Christiansen Invitational

With a sweep of the top-three pole vault spots, the Air Force men's track and field team finished first at the Jack Christiansen Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo., on Saturday, April 23, while the women's team finished third.
The men registered 185 points to top host Colorado State (167 points). Fellow MWC foe Wyoming finished third with 94.50 points, while Black Hills State (26) and UC-Colorado Springs (26) tied for fourth. South Dakota School of Mines (22.5) and Colorado (15) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, while individuals from Nike (10) and Reebok (10) tied for eighth.
Senior Makisi Haleck (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) led a 1-2-3 sweep in the pole vault. Haleck picked up his fourth event win of the season after clearing a height of 17'0?". Classmate Christian Morgan (Henderson, Nev.) finished second with a season-best matching height of 16'6?". Freshman Joel Nolan (Ypsilanti, Mich.) rounded out the top-three with a mark of 14'7?".
Air Force earned a pair of spots in the top three of the javelin, as sophomores Matt Schwandt (Manhattan, Kan.) and Marcus Wells (Joseph, Ore.) finished second and third. Schwandt's distance of 214'6" is not only a career-high by nearly 12 feet, but it is also the third-best throw in Academy history. Walls' 203'1" is also a career-best toss and is sixth all-time.
The Falcons also earned two of the top-three spots in the 1500-meter run, as sophomore Richard Elmore (Napa, Calif.) and senior Derek Storbeck (Wayne, N.J.) crossed the finish line in times of 3:55.81 and 3:56.94, respectively.
Sophomore Travis Picou (Spring Valley, Calif.) earned a pair of second-place finishes. Picou crossed the finish line of the 100-meter dash in a career-best time of 10.59, before finishing the 200-meter dash in 21.06 -- another personal-best time.
Freshman Devin Hart (Colorado Springs, Colo.) claimed second-place in the long jump with a career-best 22'10?", before placing third in the triple jump with another career-best jump at 44'2". Classmate Josh Van Wyngaarden (La Vista, Neb.) made his collegiate debut in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a second-place time of 10:04.44.
Sophomore Nick Luina (Yorktown, Va.) finished third in the 200-meter dash with a season-best time of 21.83, while taking third in the 400-meter dash in 48.38. Senior Jonathan Myers (Davenport, Iowa) picked up a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles behind a season-best time of 54.36.
With an event win in the javelin, the women totaled 129 points to finish behind meet winner Colorado State (237) and Wyoming (192). Black Hills State finished fourth with 70 points, while Colorado (23), UC-Colorado Springs (21) and South Dakota School of Mines (1) rounded out the competition.
Sophomore Caitie Holliday (Kalispell, Mont.) recorded a career-best 149'10" in the javelin to take the top spot by over a foot. Senior Lacy DeWall (Bismarck, N.D.) took third in the event with a toss of 142'0". Air Force also earned the fourth, fifth and sixth-place spots in the javelin from Brittany Wright (Laredo, Texas), Casey Bayne (El Segundo, Calif.) and Veronica Dawson (Hamilton, Ga.).
Senior Cindy Dawson (Yreka, Calif.) clocked a 2:14.73 in the 800-meter run to place second, while junior Andrea Pinchak (Shaker Heights, Ohio) clocked an 18.52.93 in the 5000-meter run to finish second in that race.
Senior Jami Hodge (Sachse, Texas) finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.54, while freshman Kate Papenberg (Red Lion, Pa.) took third in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best time of 13:06.70. Sophomore Olivia Korte (Seneca, Kan.) also claimed a third-place finish in the discus throw, tossing a 157'8".
The Falcons split for competition next weekend. Several of the cadets will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to represent the Academy at the annual Drake Relays on April 28-30. The rest of the squad will head to Boulder, Colo., for the Colorado Open on Saturday, April 30.
