Falcon Trio Earns All-Conference Honors at MWC Championships

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Three all-conference athletes highlighted the first day of individual event competition (May 13) at the 2005 Mountain West Conference Track and Field Championships in Fort Collins, Colo. Senior Paul Gensic (Fort Wayne, Ind.), sophomore Olivia Korte (Seneca, Kan.) and junior Nick Wilson (Jacksonville, Fla.) finished third in the pole vault, discus and 10,000-meter run, respectively, to earn all-conference honors.
Air Force's senior pole vault team claimed three of the top six places in the event. Gensic placed third after clearing a height of 17'5?", while Makisi Haleck (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) matched that height to finish fourth (the tie was broken by the number of attempts it took to successfully clear the bar). Christian Morgan (Henderson, Nev.) finished eighth with a height of 16'0?".
All three of the women's discus throwers scored for the Falcons; an accomplishment highlighted by Korte's third-place toss of 166'7". Senior Dominique Boivin (Shoreline, Wash.) finished fifth with a throw of 152'11", as both she and Korte set NCAA Regional Qualifying Marks. Junior Kristine Muth (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) placed eighth with a throw of 142'4".
Wilson led three Falcons onto the medal platform with a third-place time of 31:25.39. Senior Brian Dumm (Fairfax, Va.) finished fifth with a time of 31:28.20, while junior Jeff Gosselin (Cornelius, N.C.) took seventh with a time of 31:15.15.
The men also recorded a trio of top-eight finishes in the long jump. Freshman Devin Hart (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and sophomore Brian Walsh (Redlands, Calif.) finished fourth and fifth in the event with respective throws of 22'2?" and 22'1?". (Walsh's time is a personal-best). Senior Caleb Pelger (Peabody, Mass.) finished eighth with a distance of 21'6".
Senior Kyle Davidson (Houston, Texas) placed sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:26.73. Sophomore Dan St. Clair (Novi, Mich.) picked up a sixth-place finish in the discus throw behind a NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark of 168'10" -- his second qualifying mark of the season.
Sophomore Margaret Frash (Newburysport, Mass.) placed eighth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:44.07.
The Air Force men are currently in third-place with 53 points, while the women are tied for sixth with 12 points. BYU leads the men's competition with 112 points, while Colorado State is ahead on the women's side with 94 points.
Most of the races contested today were preliminaries to determine who advances to the final rounds tomorrow.
Freshman Travis Picou (Spring Valley, Calif.) was an automatic qualifier for the 100-meter dash after winning the first heat with a career-best time of 10.58. He also won the 200-meter preliminaries with a NCAA Regional Qualifying and career-best time of 21.01. Picou's time in the 200 was 0.35 faster than anyone else in the field.
Senior Jonathan Myers (Davenport, Iowa) qualified for the 110-meter hurdles with a fourth-place, season-best time of 14.85. Myers also advanced to the finals of the 400-meter hurdles behind another season-best time of 53.51.
Junior Billy Flynt (Platte City, Mo.) and sophomore Nick Luina (Yorktown, Va.) both qualified for the 400-meter dash, after crossing the finish line in 48.51 and 48.69, respectively. Freshman Calvin Glass (Antelope, Calif.) advanced in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.97.
On the women's side, sophomore Genelle Chapman (Colorado Springs, Colo.) qualified for the 100-meter dash finals with a time of 12.10. Senior Jami Hodge (Sachse, Texas) advanced to the 200-meter dash with a time of season-best 24.24
The MWC Championships conclude tomorrow (May 14) at Colorado State's Jack Christiansen Track complex. Field action begins at 10:30 a.m., with the women's javelin throw, while the first track event is slated to be the women's 4x100-meter relay at 11:30 p.m.
