FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Air Force had quite an eventful day as it wrapped up competition at the 2005 Mountain West Conference Track and Field Championships. Eight all-conference finishes on Saturday, including three individual titles, helped the men to a second-place finish, its best since 2001, with 168 points. Meanwhile, the women came in seventh with 59 points, led by junior Dana Pounds (Lexington, Ky.), champion in the javelin throw. Freshman Travis Picou (Spring Valley, Calif.) was named the Male Freshman of the Year, while sophomore Dierra Poland (Deptford, N.J.) was honored by the conference as the winner of the Sportsmanship Award.
Picou, who was also named Male Freshman of the Year at the MWC Indoor Championships, finished first in both the 100- and 200-meter races on Saturday. His time of 10.53 in the 100 just narrowly missed the school record-mark of 10.52 set by Mike Profit in 1988. Meanwhile, he clocked a 21.08 in the 200, a full three-tenths of a second in front of his nearest competitor, to grab his second Mountain West title of the day.
Junior Nick Wilson (Jacksonville, Fla.) brought home the other individual title for the Air Force men, capturing the championship in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:49.31. Senior Brian Dumm (Fairfax, Va.), with a mark of 15:03.50, and junior Mark Walter (League City, Texas), at 15:05.60, followed right behind in second and third place, respectively, giving the Falcons the sweep. Rounding out the group of scorers in the event for Air Force was junior Jeff Gosselin (Cornelius, N.C.), who finished sixth with a time of 15:13.99.
Walter added another all-conference performance by finishing third in the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:54.01. Also scoring for the Falcons in that event was sophomore Richard Elmore (Napa, Calif.), who came in at 3:57.25.
The last two all-MWC honorees for the men came from the javelin throw, with sophomores Matt Schwandt (Manhattan, Kan.) and Marcus Wells (Joseph, Ore.). Schwandt recorded a throw of 210'11" to finish second, as Wells finished with a mark of 201'2". In addition, sophomore Brandon Murphy (Leawood, Kan.) and senior Brian Willis (Albuquerque, N.M.) turned in top-eight finishes, with Murphy registering a mark of 191'3" to take sixth place in the javelin and Willis coming in seventh with a throw of 187'9".
The Falcon men picked up points in the 400-meter dash as well, where sophomore Nick Luina (Yorktown, Va.) and junior Billy Flynt (Platte City, Mo.) each recorded personal bests. Luina crossed the line in fourth place with a mark of 47.71, while Flynt was sixth with a time of 48.06. In the 800-meter run, freshman Calvin Glass (Antelope, Calif.) turned in his own personal-best performance, clocking a time of 1:51.90 to come in seventh place.
Senior Jonathan Myers (Davenport, Iowa) recorded a pair of top-eight finishes, coming in fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.89, while placing sixth in the 400-meter hurdles at 53.77. Rounding out the group of scorers for the Air Force men were sophomore Bryan Jones (Fort Walton Beach, Fla.) and freshman David Lissy (Sandpoint, Idaho), who took fourth- and sixth-place in the shot put, respectively. Jones registered a throw of 53'11.75", while Lissy recorded a mark of 52'4.75".
On the women's side, Pounds added to her dominance of the javelin throw, notching her second-consecutive Mountain West title in the event. Her toss of 183'9", just under five feet below her personal best, set a new MWC Championship record, shattering the old mark of 168'8" set in 2001 by Andrea Batt of Wyoming. More than 35 feet separated Pounds from her nearest competitor, BYU's Maret Komarova.
Meanwhile, seniors Lacy DeWall (Bismarck, N.D.) and Brittany Wright (Laredo, Texas) also scored for the Falcons in the javelin throw, as DeWall threw a season-best 143'8" to finish fifth, while Wright came in seventh with a career-best mark of 135'4".
Sophomore Olivia Korte (Seneca, Kan.), who captured all-conference honors with a third-place finish in the discus on Friday, took fourth place in the shot put with a school-record toss of 47'9.75". Also in the field events on Saturday, sophomore Casey Johnson (Los Angles, Calif.) placed eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 37'.
In the sprints, sophomore Genelle Chapman (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and senior Jami Hodge (Sachse, Texas) narrowly missed all-Mountain West honors, each coming in fourth place in their respective events. Chapman clocked a time of 12.09 in the 100-meter dash, while Hodge turned in a mark of 24.44 in the 200-meter dash.
Freshmen Kristin Trichler (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Kelly Robinson (Holt, Mich.) added points for the Falcons in the 1500-meter run. Trichler came in fourth with a mark of 4:33.35, while Robinson clocked in at 4:37.47 to finish fifth. Trichler also recorded an eighth-place finish at 5000 meters, crossing the line in a time of 17:59.36.
Next up for the Falcons is a trip to the NCAA Midwest Regionals. The competition, hosted by the University of Oklahoma, will take place May 27-28, in Norman, Okla.
