NORMAN, Okla. -- Two regional championships and one Academy record highlighted the second day of regional competition for the Air Force track and field program. Three Falcons advanced to next month's national meet during the regional finals in Norman, Okla., on Saturday, May 28.
Senior Makisi Haleck (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) cleared a career-best mark of 17'9" to win the regional title and gain an automatic berth into the NCAA championships. Haleck's mark, which is now third on the program's all-time list, also signifies the second-straight season that a member of the Air Force pole vault team has won the regional title.
Sophomore Olivia Korte (Seneca, Kan.) also advanced to her first NCAA Championships, following a third-place, career-best, performance in the discus during the day's opening event. With a throw of 175'5" on her final attempt, Korte crushed her personal-best, Academy-record, performance by nearly five feet to finish third in the regional finals.
Junior Dana Pounds (Lexington, Ky.) advanced to her second straight national meet, after winning the javelin with a throw of 174'6". Pounds' regional-winning mark was nearly six feet farther than anyone else in the field.
Also from the men's pole vault, senior Christian Morgan (Henderson, Nev.) cleared a season-best mark of 16'7?" to finish 18th, while junior Jason Jones (Park City, Utah) placed 22nd with a height of 16'1?". Senior Paul Gensic (Fort Wayne, Ind.) no-heighted his opening attempt after passing on the first two heights.
In other action from the women's javelin throw, senior Lacy DeWall (Bismarck, N.D.) placed 14th with a toss of 138'10", while sophomore Caitie Holliday (Kalispell, Mont.) palced 21st with a distance of 129'2".
Freshman Kristin Trichler (Santa Barbara, Calif.) placed eighth in the finals of the women's 1500-meter dash after clocking a time of 4:30.35, while junior Mark Walter (League City, Texas) earned the same place-finish in the men's race behind a time of 3:48.82. And despite being sick all day, freshman Travis Picou (Spring Valley, Calif.) picked up an eighth-place time in the finals of the 200-meter dash after crossing the finish line in 22.16.
As eighth-place finishers, Trichler, Walter and Picou are all up for at-large consideration into the national championship competition. The top-five finishers from each region are automatically accepted to the national meet, while the sixth through eighth-place performances from the four regional sites are still in the running, based on national standings once the preliminary meets are completed.
Sophomore Margaret Frash (Newburyport, Mass.) placed 10th in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:03.48. Korte also participated in the finals of the shot put, placing 12th with a throw of 46'6?".
The three advancing Falcons -- Haleck, Korte and Pounds -- will head to the national championships on June 8-11 in Sacramento, Calif.
