Mark Walter Earns At-Large Berth to NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Air Force junior Mark Walter (League City, Texas) was awarded an at-large berth into the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the national office announced today (May 31) with the posting of the official meet declarations.
Walter, who finished eighth in the 1500-meter run at last weekend's regional meet with a time of 3:44.49, will join senior Makisi Haleck (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) as representatives for the men's team. Haleck won the Midwest regional pole vault title with a career-best 17'9". Walter's time in the 1500 is ranked 18th in the nation, while Haleck's pole vault height is seventh.
Junior Dana Pounds (Lexington, Ky.) and sophomore Olivia Korte (Seneca, Kan.) will serve as the Air Force contingent on the women's side. Pounds, who continues to lead the country in the javelin, earned the automatic selection with her first regional title. Korte set an Academy record in the discus with a third-place throw of 175'5" -- the 13th best mark in the country.
The top five place-finishers at the four regional sites earned automatic bids to the national meet, while the sixth through eighth-place finishers were available for at-large consideration based on the national rankings following the regional meet. Below is a list of the four Air Force athletes and their standings within their respective fields (as stated by the NCAA declarations on May 31).
The Air Force quartet will travel to Sacramento, Calif., for the national outdoor track and field championships on June 8-12.
