Track and Field Nets Seven MWC Scholar-Athletes

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Air Force track and field team had seven members earn Mountain West Conference Scholar Athlete honors for the 2004-05 season, the league office announced today (July 11).
Recently graduated javelin thrower Brittany Wright (Laredo, Texas) was one of two members of the women's team to earn the annual MWC honor, posting a 3.70 grade-point-average in political science. Sophomore steeplechase record-holder Margaret Frash (Newburyport, Mass.), who was also named a scholar athlete in cross country, tallied a 3.83 in aeronautical engineering to earn Scholar-Athlete honors.
Junior distance runner Matt Hellier (Modesto, Calif.) earned Scholar-Athlete honors with a 3.60 GPA in computer sciences. .
Four freshmen rounded out the Air Force contingent from the track and field program. Distance runner Kenny Grosselin (Ramstein AB, Germany) led the first-year athletes (and all Air Force representatives) with a 3.92 GPA in mathematics. Fellow distance runner Josh Van Wyngaarden (La Vista, Neb.) recorded a 3.77 GPA in biology, while decathlete Brian Rahl (Humble, Texas) posted a 3.73 with an undeclared major. Pole vaulter Joel Nolan (Ypsilanti, Mich.) rounded out the list with a 3.51 in behavioral sciences.
In addition, track and field distance runners Vivien Aspden (Yucaipa, Calif.) and Elizabeth Catherwood (Bethesda, Md.) earned scholar-athlete honors for cross country, backed by Aspden's 3.78 in physics and Catherwood's 3.90 in mathematics.
To be considered a Mountain West Conference Scholar Athlete, they must have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, completed at least two academic semesters and earned at least one varsity letter for their respective teams.
