First Back-to-Back OT Wins Since `86
Air Force's overtime victories over Creighton and UNLV were the first consecutive overtime wins for the Academy since the 1996 season. The Falcons defeated Regis, 2-1, on Oct. 2 and San Diego State, 3-1, on Oct. 11. At that time, overtime consisted of two full 15-minute periods. That was also the last year that Air Force won two overtime games in the same season.
Last Week's Recap
Denver 3, Air Force 0
The University of Denver scored three first half goals and goalie Matt Bredehoft had to make just one save in posting his fourth shutout of the season Saturday as the Pioneer men's soccer team defeated Air Force, 3-0, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. With the victory, DU improved its record to 7-3-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation while the Falcons fell to 2-8-1 and 1-2 in the MPSF.
Mike Seager opened the scoring for the Pioneers in the 15th minute when he took a through pass from James Merriman and knocked a shot from eight yards past Falcon goalkeeper Brian Guyette. Ben Mendozza made the score 2-0 in the 26th minute with an 18-yard rocket to the upper left part of the net. Mendozza gathered the ball at the top of the box after a DU throw in and an Air Force defender tried to clear.
The Pioneers stretched the lead to 3-0 when the Falcon defender Jason Belvill attempted a back pass to Guyette that was intercepted by DU's Joey Mathot. Mathot fed Jacob Chase, who had an open net from 18 yards and put it away.
Denver locked down defensively in the second half, controlling the play in their end for most of the 45 minutes. The Falcons, who attempted just 11 total shots in the game compared to 20 for DU, took only five shots in the second half, with none of them on goal.
Guyette made four saves for the Falcons, including three in the second half. DU held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
