First Back-to-Back OT Wins Since `86
Air Force's overtime victories over Creighton and UNLV were the first consecutive overtime wins for the Academy since the 1996 season. The Falcons defeated Regis, 2-1, on Oct. 2 and San Diego State, 3-1, on Oct. 11. At that time, overtime consisted of two full 15-minute periods. That was also the last year that Air Force won two overtime games in the same season.
Last Weekend's Recaps
Sacramento State 3, Air Force 1
Oscar Sandoval scored two goals and Ryan Rhoads added an insurance tally in the 83rd minute Friday, leading the Sacramento State men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Air Force in Sacramento, Calif. The Hornets improve to 5-8-0 on the season and 2-2-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Falcons fall to 2-9-1 and 1-3-0 in the MPSF. Sacramento State held a one-goal advantage entering the second half before Air Force freshman Josh Nannen tied the match in the 74th minute with the first goal of his career, heading Josh Rhynard's cross to the left post and past Hornet goalkeeper Ryan Kenny. With the assist, Rhynard upped his team-leading point total to nine. Sandoval then answered the Falcons less than six minutes later with his second goal of the game, combining with midfielder Eli Millan. Sandoval collected Millan's pass inside the box and took a quick touch before directing his shot to the left corner and past Falcon goalkeeper Brian Guyette. Five minutes later, Rhoads iced the match with his fifth goal of the season in the 83rd minute. Goalkeeper Ryan Kenny provided the assist with a deep punt 70 yards down field. Rhoads collected Kenny's service off the bounce and put it past Guyette after the Air Force keeper came off his line and misplayed the ball. Kenny earned his second victory in the net for Sacramento State, making a match-high seven stops including a point blank save on freshman Steve Noller's shot from seven yards out in the 63rd minute. Sandoval, who led the team with eight goals a season ago, scored Sacramento State's first goal of the match in the 23rd minute, receiving a pass from senior Ismael Echeverría in the box and working his way around two Falcon defenders before placing his shot to the near post.
San Jose State 1, Air Force 0 (ot)
El Shaddai Bent scored his first career goal at the 98:21 mark in overtime to give the San Jose State men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Air Force on Sunday afternoon in Spartan Stadium. SJSU improved to 6-6-1 overall and 3-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Falcons fell to 2-10-1 and 1-4 in the MPSF.
A sloppy contest in which a combined 45 fouls were called led to two scoreless halves, and it looked like the match would go into a second overtime before Julio Gonzalez flipped the ball over the top to the foot of Bent, who beat his man and ultimately Falcon goalkeeper Brian Guyette to decide the contest. Hiroki Akiyama was also credited with an assist on the play.
The Spartan defense held the Falcons in check all afternoon long, as Air Force was able to muster just three shots on goal. Spartan goalie Richard Mann earned his fourth shutout of the season, equaling his total from a year ago.
Mann's counterpart, Guyette, made five saves in the match, as San Jose State outshot Air Force 19-11. Five players had at least two shots for the Spartans. SJSU also had seven corner kicks to the Falcons' three in the match.
Junior Chris Mathews led Air Force with three shots, while sophomores Reid Gaiser and Jason Dall each attempted two.
