Falcons Take Fourth Place At Early Bird Invitational

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Air Force womens' swimming team took fourth place at the 2006 Early Bird Invitational over the weekend at the Epic Center Pool. The Falcons followed up invite-winner and host, Colorado State, Wyoming and Northern Colorado.
Colorado placed fifth, followed by Colorado School of Mines and Metro State.
In day one action on Friday, the Falcons opened the meet by taking eighth place in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The group of Jane Hwang, Kallyn Johnson, Tiffany Biddle and Laken Stoger combined to swim the 200 free relay in a time of 1:44.39.
The Falcons top swimmer Friday was senior Lauren White, who took second in the 500 free. White swam the fastest time of the event in the prelims with a swim of 5:05.50 and then followed up with a time of 5:08.93 in the finals. Just right after swimming the 200 free relay, Biddle placed 23rd in the 500 free with a prelim time of 5:12.50.
The Falcons had six swimmers in the 200 individual medley, led by sophomore Jane Hwang. Hwang placed sixth in the event with a finals time of 2:13.33 after swimming the second-fastest time in the prelims with a swim of 2:09.50. Blair Leake finished 20th, Becky Gleason 27th, Stephanie Hirst 28th, Lindsay Brown 29th and Katelyn Hunter 30th to round out the other Falcon swimmers.
In the 50 free, Stogner led the way for Air Force with an eighth place finish with a finals swim of 25.40. Robbie Nitzberg took 26th, Johnson 28th and Solange Eddy 36th in the 50 free for the Falcons.
AFA rounded out day one action by taking eighth in the 400 medley relay. Hunter, Leake, Gleason and White combined to swim a time of 4:13.50.
In day two, the Falcons opened the meet by placing fifth in the 200 medley relay. Hunter, Leake, Hwang and Stogner combined to finish with a time of 1:52.18.
In the 400 IM, Gleason was the lone Falcon swimmer, placing eighth with a swim of 4:53.14.
The Falcons sent six swimmers out for the 100fly, led by Hwang's eighth place finish (1:00.94). Leake took 18th, Nitzberg 22nd, Hunter 25th, Brown 30th and Wildner 34th.
Six AFA swimmers also took part in the 200 free, led by White's fifth place finish (1:56.80). Stogner took 13th, Biddle 32nd, Brown 33rd, Nitzberg 38th and Johnson 39th.
In the 100 breaststroke Leake placed fifth with a time of 1:09.51. Hirst followed up in the 12th and Eddy 19th. The Falcons then sent out seven swimmers for the 100 backstroke, led by Hwang's 11th place finish (1:02.27). Hunter followed up in 17th, Stogner in 22nd, Gleason 24th, Johnson 28th, Hirst 29th and Wildner in 37th.
In the 800 Free relay, White, Gleason, Wildner and Biddle teamed to place seventh with a time of 8:31.69. White and Gleason immediately swam the following event, the grueling 1650 free, with White taking 6th with a time of 18:17.47 and Gleason taking 15th with a time of 19:30.86.
In the 100 free, Stogner led the way with a 12th place finish (55.89). Hunter took 19th, Nitzberg 40th and Wildner 44th. In the 200 breast Leak placed fifth with a time of 2:30.52. Hwang followed up in ninth, Hirst 12th and Eddy in 20th place.
The Falcons wrapped up the invite by taking fifth in the 400 free relay. Hwang, White, Leake and Stogner combined to finish with a time of 3:44.09.
Air Force returns to action Friday, Oct. 27 in a five-way meet at the University of Denver.
