USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force men's and women's swim teams travel to Southern California to take part in the UCI/Speedo Cup, beginning this Thursday at the Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, Calif. The Speedo Cup will consist of 16 men's teams and 23 women's teams over three days of competition from Nov. 16-18.
Speedo Cup Preview/Info: The Speedo Cup will feature three top-25 men's teams including No. 2 Stanford, No. 8 USC and No. 24 Brigham Young. UC San Diego will compete in the meet and the Tritons are No. 1 in the country for both men and women in NCAA Division II. There will be a total of seven Division I men's teams and 13 D-I women's teams.
Meet information and results can be found at UC Irvine's Swimming Page at: http://www.swim.uci.edu/2006speedocup.html
"The Speedo Cup is a fantastic meet to finish our Fall Schedule," men's head coach Rob Clayton said. "Two of the top men's teams in the country--Stanford and USC--will be competing, as well as some post-grad Olympians. We've had some great meets the past couple weeks and look forward to putting up some fast times in Long Beach."
Last Time Out: The Air Force men's team improved to 10-1 in dual meets after downing TCU, 142.50-91.50, in a key Mountain West Conference dual. The Falcon women split their double dual with TCU and New Mexico State. Air Force lost 63-50 to TCU and won 68-45 over NMSU.
The Air Force men's team dominated right out the gate, winning the first eight events and taking 9-of-13 events. Seniors Chris Knaute and Paul Parmenter and junior T.J. Cowling combined to win six events to lead the way for the Falcons.
On the women's side, the Falcons were led by senior Lauren White who dominated the mid- and distance-free events. White won the 200 (1:57.68), 500 (5:14.77) and 1000 free (10:40.95) events. Sophomore Jane Hwang also won an event for AFA, winning the 100 free with a time of 53.91.
Knaute Named MWC Swimmer of the Week, Again: On Nov. 8, Senior Chris Knaute was named Mountain West Confence Men's Swimmer of the Week for the second consecutive week. Knaute also took MWC Men's Swimmer of the Week honors on Oct. 31.
Knaute took first place in four events at the Lincoln Aquatics Shootout in leading the Falcons to a 5-1 record in the two-day meet in Irvine, Calif. Knaute has now won six MWC Swimmer of the Week honors in his career.
Last Time at Speedo Cup: Last year, the Falcon men's team placed second out of 14 teams, edging conference rival BYU by one spot. National-powerhouse Stanford was the only team to edge the Falcons. The Falcon women also swam well, taking sixth out of 20 schools.
Up Next: The Falcons return to action in 2007, taking part in the UC San Diego Relay Invite on Jan. 5 in La Jolla, Calif.
