U.S.A.F. ACADEMY, Colo. - Alexandre Parent's goal with 1:24 left in the third period forced overtime as Air Force and Sacred Heart skated to a 3-3 overtime tie in an Atlantic Hockey Association game Friday, Dec. 1, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena.
Sacred Heart remained in first place in the AHA with a 7-2-3 conference record and a 9-4-3 overall mark. Air Force is in fourth place in the conference with a 5-2-2 record, 8-7-2 overall.
Air Force opened the scoring at 6:44 of the first period on the power play. Brian Reese scored his third of the season on a rebound of a Mike Phillipich slap shot. Eric Ehn also assisted on the play. Sacred Heart then scored the next two goals for a 2-1 lead. Dave Jarman scored at the 10:21 mark from Peter Ferraro. Ferraro intercepted an Air Force pass from behind the Falcons' own net. He then fed a wide open Jarman on the far post to tie the game at 1-1. Three minutes later, Pierre-Luc O'Brien stick-handled into the zone and scored his 12th of the season from Scott Marchesi and Bear Trapp.
The Falcons tied the game early in the second period on Phillipich's seventh of the season. Ehn won a faceoff back to Billy Devoney at the point. His slap shot was redirected by Phillipich to tie the game at 2-2 at the 2:39 mark of the second period.
The score remained tied until Josh Frider tipped in a pass from Ehn at 7:59 of the third period. Ehn's pass from the right point was waist high at the top of the crease and Frider batted it down for his third goal of the season. Frank Schiavone also assisted on the goal that gave the Falcons a 3-2 lead.
With 1:29 remaining, Sacred Heart pulled its goaltender in favor of the extra skater. On the ensuing faceoff, O'Brien won the draw and Parent's shot rattled through the pads of Air Force goalie Peter Foster. The puck slowly hit the inside of the far post and crawled over the goal line to tie the game at 3-3.
Just 45 seconds into overtime, Ehn won a draw in the offensive end and Andrew Ramsey's slap shot from the faceoff dot hit the post and came back out the other side. Air Force had three shots on goal in overtime while SHU had two but neither team scored.
Air Force out-shot Sacred Heart, 38-25, in the game. Jason Smith made 35 saves for the Pioneers while Foster made 22 for the Falcons. The Falcons were 1-for-3 on the power play while Sacred Heart was 0-for-2.
"We played better in the second and third periods than we did in the first," head coach Frank Serratore said. "This was not a good tie for us. It was a good tie for them because they came from behind. We are behind them in the standings and we need to gain ground on them. We cant' do that by tying. That is disheartening. It was right there for us to win and we need to find a way to win these games."
Air Force and Sacred Heart conclude the two-game conference series Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7:35 p.m. MST.
