USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Sophomore Harvey White became the first boxer this season to claim multiple Boxer of the Week honors, as the Air Force boxing team hosted another action-packed round of Friday Night Fights on Dec. 1, in the Upper Boxing Room. In all, there were 17 bouts on the card, as numerous contenders picked up experience for the 2007 Wing Open Tournament.
"There were a lot of tough bouts of the course of the night," the coaching staff of Eddie Weichers and Capt. Erwin Vargas said. "A lot of boxers sucked up their fatigue and were able to gut out a tough decision. Many boxers made a statement to their weight divisions that they were ready to take on tougher challenges; putting together good hard combinations and stiff jabs."
White picked up his second honor of the season after picking up a referee-stopped-contest (second round) over Matthew McPhail in a 129-pound contest. Using good movement and hard combinations to his opponent's head and body, White was able to stop his opponent in the second round with a strong body shot.
Colin LaFavor opened the evening with a decision over Chris Johnson at 188 pounds. John Quinn collected a heavyweight decision from Eric Garcia, while Joe Conrad decisioned Bruce Jamison at 175 pounds.
Nathan Liptak picked up a decision at 157 pounds, as the judges awarded him the victory over fellow squad member Regan Dela Cruz. Daryn Nelson claimed a 160-pound decision over Jahmil Edwards, while Jesse Horton earned a victory over James Quon at 125 pounds when the referee stopped their contest in the first round.
Travis Miller defeated Dave Simon at 135 pounds, as that contest was stopped in the second round. Mike Nettis decisioned Alexander Shin and 143 pounds, while Kenneth Kaczmarek picked up a referee-stopped-contest (first round) over Kevin Jerde at 149 pounds.
Colly Deaton's decision over John Pulli at 160 pounds began a streak of four bouts within the 160-170 pound weight classes. At 165 pounds, Austin Almand earned a referee-stopped-contest (second round) over Quinton Croft, while Robert Steigerwald decisioned Robert Louder at 167 pounds. Robert Dunn rounded out the quartet with a win over Issac Houston at 169 pounds, when the referee stopped their bout in the opening round.
Jon Andresen decisioned Mike Tolzien at 175 pounds, while Evin Negron picked up a 187-pound decision over Andrew Catoire. Charles Arden closed out the night with a heavyweight victory by decision over Tyler Cody.
The Falcons close out the fall semester next week (Dec. 8) with another exciting round of Friday Night Fights. Action is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m., in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym.
