USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- With 15 spots in the annual Wing Open Championships on the line, the Air Force boxing team hosted a spirited round of semifinal action on Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym. Nothing was held back as 30 contenders fought for their right to become one of the final two boxers at Clune Arena.
The night began with an upset at 132 pounds, when freshman Nicholas Goc claimed a split decision over defending Wing Open champion, Brian Navin (who won the title last year as a freshman). Goc was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week for his performance in the ring. Senior James Baker also claimed a decision at 132 pounds after splitting the vote with Kellen Griswold.
Senior Luis Pena quickly picked up the right to defend his 147-pound title, as he dispatched Matt Johnson in a referee-stopped contest (first round). Pena, a two-time Wing Open champion, will face classmate Lonnie Ash, who unanimously decisioned Juan Carlos Pino.
Ryan Price handed Rudy Bowen his first loss of the season, as he claimed a unanimous decision at 147 pounds. Jahmil Edwards also advanced at the 147-pound weight class, as he claimed a split decision from Daryn Nelson.
Trevor Cook punched his return ticket to the Wing Open finals at 156 pounds, after taking a unanimous call from James Dunn. Clifford Moore landed several hard body shots, en route to the referee stopping his 156-pound contest with Greg Witzig in the first round.
The first bout of the 165-pound semifinals was also a shortened one, as Joe Conrad's bout with Ross Hopkin was stopped in the third round, marking the second straight 'rsc' bout for Conrad in the tournament. Mark Ruther unanimously decisioned Ruben Ihuit in the night's other contest at that weight class.
First-time finalists Evin Negron and Bruce Jamison both advanced to the finals of the 175-pound weight class by unanimous decisions. Negron ended Charles Cycon's Wing Open run, while Jamison topped Mike Bosack.
A strong third round led to Oscar Casillas returning to the ring at Clune Arena for the fourth straight season in a 185-pound contest. After causing two standing eight counts in the first two rounds, Casillas used an aggressive start to the third period to defeat Ryan Cwynar by a referee stopped contest. After a year off from competitive boxing, Colin LaFavor defeated Chris Johnson by a unanimous decision to advance in the other 185-pound bout.
The night's final bout was a heavyweight contest that featured John Quinn earning a unanimous decision over boxing newcomer Matt Campbell.
In addition, J.J. Homan (125 pounds) and Eric Garcia (195 pounds) each advanced to the finals by walkover.
The winners will converge on Clune Arena next Friday (March 3) for the final round of competition in the 2006 Wing Open Tournament. The night, which is slated to begin at 7 p.m., will feature 11 bouts, ranging from 112-pounds to heavyweight.
