RENO, Nev. -- The Air Force boxing team wrapped up the regular season with an impressive showing in Reno, Nev., on Friday, Feb. 3. The Falcons, competing against other programs in the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) West Region, picked up seven victories and just four losses in an 11-bout night at the El Dorado Hotel in Reno, Nev.
"The competition showcased some great matches," the coaching staff of Eddie Weichers and Capt Erwin Vargas said after the game. "The team showed true grit and determination. Conditioning was a major factor in every bout as Air Force was able to wear down their opponents and push the action into the third round."
J.J. Homan and Evin Negron got the evening underway with a pair of victories over boxers from UNLV. Homan picked up a 128-pound decision over Ulysses Gomez, while Negron decisioned Jason Crocco in a 175-pound match-up.
D.J. Reese of UNLV claimed a 165-pound decision from Trevor Cook, but Air Force quickly responded with another pair of victories. Clifford Moore defeated Nevada's Mitchell Martinez in a 160-pound decision, while Colin LaFavor earned a 185-pound decision over Cal's Bobby Bogner.
Nicholas Goc earned the Academy's Boxer of the Week honors after earning a 138-pound victory over Nevada's Daniel Atkinson when the referee stopped the bout in the third round. Displaying his superior conditioning, Goc delivered hard punches, thrown at various angles, to stop Atkinson in the third.
The Falcons claimed another early-round win from Luis Pena, who stopped Nevada's Mike Monroe in a 142-pound bout, when the referee stopped their contest in the third.
Air Force's next three competitors dropped decisions in their respective weight classes to Nevada boxers. Jose Casas topped Ezekiel Ignaco at 125 pounds, while Thomas Gennaro decisioned Daryn Nelson at 147 pounds and Francisco Torres downed Jahmil Edwards at 152 pounds.
Ian Tuznik closed out the evening with a heavyweight victory over Nevada's John Lorman.
The Falcons next major round of action will be Wednesday, Feb. 15, when the 2006 Wing Open Tournament gets underway at 4:30 in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym.
