RENO, Nev. -- Juniors Willie Lloyd, Ezekiel Ignaco and Ian Tuznik advanced to the final round of competition at the 2006 National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Championships on Friday, April 7, in Reno, Nev.
It was a disappointing night for the Falcons, who went 3-5 overall. Air Force is currently in fourth place, as it heads into the final night of action.
In a rematch of last year's national semifinal bout, Lloyd picked up a decision from Army's Mike Benedosso in the 112-pound weight class. It is the second straight year that Lloyd has claimed the decision over Benedosso in the semifinal route, as last year he did it en route to his first national title.
A two-time national quarterfinalist, Ignaco advanced to the NCBA championship round after a hard-fought bout with Kentucky's Tyler Sexton in the first of two 119-pound contests. Tuznik also advanced to the national finals, as he defeated Greg Stratton of Lock Haven in the semifinals of the heavyweight division.
Air Force's five other competitors all suffered decision losses in their respective weight classes. Senior Jeremy Homan lost to Navy's Jeremy Biggs, the defending national champion at 125 pounds. Classmate Luis Pena dropped a decision to Josh Mercado of Lock Haven, bringing his season slate to an impressive 10-3.
Sophomore Clifford Moore's remarkable 11-2 season came to close with a loss to Greg Murrell, the defending 156-pound national champion from UNLV. Junior Joe Conrad was decisioned in a 165-pound bout by Lock Haven's James Varner, while sophomore John Quinn lost to Steve Soloja in the 195-pound semifinal bout.
With the Falcons' title hopes on the line, Air Force's three national contenders will take to the ring tomorrow (April 8) at the El Dorado Hotel in Reno, Nev.
