Nick Wilson Wins MWC 10,000-Meter Title

PROVO, Utah -- Senior Nick Wilson clocked a time of 31:38.43 to win the title in the 10,000-meter run during the first full day of action at the Mountain West Conference Track and Field Championships in Provo, Utah. Besting the runner-up by nearly 16 seconds, Wilson claimed his second conference crown in as many years.
On the women's side, junior Olivia Korte picked up all-conference honors following a third-place, NCAA Regional Qualifying throw of 164'0" in the discus. In addition, Korte also posted a career-best 165'6" in the hammer throw to finish seventh. That toss improved her fifth-place standing on the Academy's all-time list.
Wilson was one of two scoring runners for the Air Force men's team, as classmate Jeff Gosselin clocked 32:11.33 to finish fourth. Air Force also earned points from a quartet of field athletes. Senior Jason Jones and sophomore Joel Nolan placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the pole vault. The duo cleared matching heights of 16'0?", but Jones earned the advantage on the number of attempts to clear the second height. Senior Dan St. Clair used a throw of 168'6" in the discus to place fifth, while classmate Chikaodi Akalaonu placed sixth in the hammer throw after tossing a 172'0".
Along with Korte's two scores, the women also earned points from juniors Margaret Frash and Dierra Poland. Frash clocked a fifth-place time of 11:09.32 in the 3000-meter steeplechase, while Poland recorded a career-best 18'1" to take eighth in the long jump. Poland's jump is fifth on the Academy's all-time list.
The Air Force men are currently in fourth place with 39 points. Host BYU Leads the field with 101 points, while Colorado State (87) and New Mexico (47) round out the top three. On the women's side, the Falcons are fifth with 13 points. Colorado State holds the top spot with 92.50 points and BYU is second with 71 points. Utah rounds out the top three with 38 points.
In addition to the event finals, several preliminary races were contested this afternoon. The Falcons qualified seven athletes for tomorrow's finals.
Sophomore Travis Picou qualified for a pair of sprints. Clocking a NCAA Regional Qualifying Time of 20.77, Picou finished fourth in the 200-meter dash -- one of just two non-TCU athletes to advance to the final eight. Picou also qualified in the 100-meter dash after winning the first heat in a time of 10.65 (third overall).
Air Force also sent three athletes into the finals of the 800-meter run. Sophomore Calvin Glass won the first heat with a time of 1:52.50, en route to a second-place overall finish. Senior Travis Patterson clocked a time of 1:52.13 to finish sixth, while sophomore Kevin Hawkins ran a 1:52.87 to finish eighth.
Two more athletes also advanced to the finals of the 400-meter dash. Junior Nick Luina clocked a NCAA Regional Qualifying Time of 47.10 to finish fourth in the preliminary heat, while sophomore Kyle Meakins crossed the finish line in 47.99 to finish sixth. Luina's time is the seventh-best mark in Academy history.
